CHIM. Forme impure du borax (borate de soude). Borax (...). Clivage parfait (...). Dispersion croisée (...). Saveur alcaline. Gonfle et fond au chalumeau (...). Se trouve sur les bords de certains lacs au Tibet, en Californie, en Perse, etc. C'est le tincal ou tinkal de l'Inde (LAPPARENT, Minér., 1899, p. 512).
Prononc. et Orth.:[]. LITTRÉ, Lar. Lang. fr., ROB. 1985: tincal ou tinkal. Étymol. et Hist. 1602 tincar, tincal (A. COLIN, Hist. des drogues, sur la trad. lat. de Clusius [De L'Escluse], 1. I, chap. 35, p. 208: on l'appelle [le Chrysocolle] Borax, les Arabes et habitans du Guzarate, Tincar, ou Tincal); 1765 tinkal (Encyclop.). Empr. au port. tincal (1516 DUARTE BARBOSA ds MACH., 1563 GARCIA DA ORTA ds DALG.) et celui-ci à l'ar. , « borax », lui-même empr. à une lang. de l'Inde (cf. skr. - « borax » N. STCHOUPAK, L. NITTI et L. RENOU, Dict. skr.-fr., p. 268), peut-être par l'intermédiaire du persan . À l'ar. ont également été empr. le lat. médiév. atincar, tincar (XIIe-XIIIe s. ds Mittellat. W., s.v. atincar) et l'esp. atincar (XIVe s. ds COR.-PASC.). Selon LOK. n° 2080, le malais tingkal aurait servi d'intermédiaire entre le skr. et le persan.
